I knew I didnt want to work for anyone else anymore so I opened a tanning salon about 2 years ago. I took money from 401k and equity from my house. It only took about 25k to get it started. Luckily for me, my business kicked off real well. We are just a small salon in a small town but we have over 1500 clients from many different towns around the area and still growing! I dont know the type of things your interested in but there are many of small businesses that you could get yourself into with little start up costs. Make sure you really want to be a business owner because it can be very stressful at times and the income is never guaranteed. I was miserable working in an office 50-60 hours a week. I took a course. Now I am a certified animal massage therapist. I work for myself, set my own schedule, make great $$$$, and alleviate suffering in animals. The beauty of this is that once it gets going (and it is a little slow in the beginning) you can work as much or as little as you choose.
